Electric Coffee Roasters
The Difference in Electric Coffee Roasters
For reasons of ease of use and installation, home coffee roasters and some small batch commercial sample roasters are often electric.
Small, high quality home coffee roasting appliances such as the Behmor 1600, Gene Café, and Hottop roasters are all equipped with heating elements sized to the common 120 volt 15 amp electrical outlet.
Two issues severely limit the batch size capacity of these roasters.
The first is simply the 15 amp circuit they are designed to operate on. This limits the maximum heating capacity of any 120 volt operated appliance to roughly 1800 watts. As a practical matter, continuous draw of most home use designed appliance roasters is 1200 watts or less.
The second issue is the price point relative to their construction. These are “mass market” machines specifically designed around criteria like how they fit in cartons sized for maximum loads in shipping containers, not how well they actually roast coffee.
The Behmor 1600, Gene Café, and Hottop are all the product of brilliant engineering. Each represents a truly innovative effort to provide an affordable, high quality, and yet convenient, home coffee roasting experience to the masses. Once you’ve reached the limits of their performance, it’s time to upgrade.
Mill City Roasters currently offers three electrically heated commercial quality coffee roasters from two different manufacturers for aspiring artisan home and professional lab and shop roasting.
The North Coffee Equipment TJ-067-E is a 1 kg commercial drum roaster equipped with a bank of heaters totaling 3500 watts on a standard 240 volt, 20 amp circuit. It features solid plate steel construction for maximum thermal stability and a high iron content very heavy perforated stainless steel drum. Capable of back to back 1200 gram fully profiled roasts, it’s hourly production capacity can exceed 10 lbs per hour.
The Coffee-Tech Engineering Solar and and FZ-94 roasters are possibly the most sophisticated 2+kg coffee roasters available anywhere.
The Coffee-Tech Engineering Solar is a fully automatic profiling production system capable of three 2 kg “hands off” roasts per hour. Controlled by a sophisticated algorithm and quietly churning out a day or more supply of superbly roasted coffee with a minimum of supervision, it is an ideal shop roaster for busy shops and cafes.
For precisely controlled manual roasting of batch sizes ranging from 100 to 2300 grams via an integrated datalogging interface, the Coffee-Tech Engineering FZ-94 is the electric shop and coffee lab roaster, perfected. Variable frequency drives provide precise and repeatable drum and fan speed control with each of the three heating elements independently operated to manage precise temperature control.
To be sure, our Mill City Electrics are much larger and much more sophisticated than simple roasting appliances and are a very large leap forward in performance and throughput. Although offering the ease of installation and safety of operation of electric heat, they minimize the compromise inherent in less expensive designs allowing their user the ability to minutely coax individual batches to roasted perfection.
