Gas fired coffee roasters offer the most precise temperature control and fastest response times for adjusting roasting temperatures during the roast.
Using a gas coffee roaster allows the user to more precisely tailor a roast profile for the best possible balance of sweetness, tartness and mouth feel. This same precision allows the operator to avoid inadvertent “roast defects” such as tipping, scorching, burning, or outright baking the flavor out of the coffee.
Although the relative nimbleness of a gas coffee roaster is a great advantage for the artisan roaster, the open flame increases the necessity for diligent supervision during the roast and regular maintenance upon completion.
For safety and optimal performance, the roaster must be carefully and sensibly maintained. Chaff and residue must be removed frequently lest it become a fire hazard. Gas pipes, valves and fittings must be frequently checked for leaks. Gas valves should always be left closed both at the source and at the roaster.
Although perfectly acceptable coffee can be produced by a variety of means, none of them offer the degree of control over temperature, agitation, airflow, and heating that a well designed gas drum coffee roaster affords.
When the quality of your roasting requires no compromise in control and repeatability, a gas coffee roaster is usually the final answer.
