Soil Management – Coffee Farmers Look Beyond Rust
For those of you interested in greens, long down the road, take time to read an excellent article on soil management from Daily Coffee News.
Luis Álvarez Welchez of Catholic Relief Services discusses a much more holistic approach to soil management. I remember my uncle on his farm loading up with nitrogen and then in a few months, pouring on the herbicides. Luis would suggest this is the best way known to “kill” the soil. Luis suggests that farmers move away from synthetic herbicides.
Soil management is emerging in Central America as farmers, suffering the effects of rust on their coffee crop, are looking for answers to stave off the next disaster. Luis recommends “…that farmers make sure that their soils receive the requisite amounts of organic matter, moisture, sunlight, aeration, nutrients, vegetative cover, etc…”
Good stuff, give it a read here.
