Join us at our SCA Certified Training Lab and Roasting facility in Minneapolis, MN and participate in an intensive, two-day Barista Skills course.
Are you an owner or a hopeful owner of a cafe?
Are you a roasting company owner and you need to acquire basic barista skills in order to ensure your customers have the best experience with you espresso blends and coffee offerings?
Are you a barista looking to hone your skills and gain and SCA credential toward your Coffee Skills Diploma?
Are you building a team of baristas, looking to better train them, put protocols in place for your company, have drink recipes that are repeatable and consistent, and looking for tips and tricks to pass your knowledge to the staff?
We will be alternating from coffee and espresso theory to instructor demonstration, to practical application and practice. Our class size is limited to 6 students to make room for plenty of personalized learning. Lunch is provided on both days, and you know we will always provide fresh coffee.
Visit our Mill City Campus page for travel and accommodation information to plan your trip to our beautiful Twin Cities.
Be advised April classes could potentially be canceled – we will announce no later than Friday, March 27th. If you choose to make travel arrangements before the 27th, we suggest choosing refundable travel options.
Beginning with Basics
We’ll begin by reviewing basic coffee, espresso, and cafe operations knowledge with an informative lecture and discussion. Understanding the key characteristics of coffee, sensory science, and cafe workflow will help us approach training with a clear focus. Drawing from the unique needs of your business, we’ll work to incorporate the Seed to Cup story into your training program, with a focus on building respect and care for coffee and customers.
Building Sensory Skills
Tasting exercises, comparative cuppings, and fun team challenges are excellent ways to reinforce larger concepts and build team. We will introduce ways to build regular tastings and palate expansion exercises into your cafe’s training protocol and discover ways that these events build employee engagement and improve the customer experience.
Espresso Bar Training
After reviewing foundational espresso skills such as dialing in, adjusting the grind, steaming milk, and cleaning the espresso machine, we will practice different ways to facilitate learning at the espresso bar. Whether you want to improve your own skills, train new baristas, work with wholesale accounts, or challenge an experienced team to work faster, cleaner, and more efficiently, our hands-on approach will offer instruction and practice. We’ll also introduce methods to train and improve latte art skills, milk sharing, and manual brewing.
Developing a Service Style
Your product is only as good as the way it’s served, and most customers will decide where to spend their money based solely on their customer service experience. We will explain the different areas of customer service and draw from our own personal experiences to understand what does and doesn’t work when it comes to great service. We’ll focus on the areas of the customer experience that are most important to your brand, and discuss ways to set standards and expectations that are easy for your team to execute.
Training & Education Theory
The best baristas aren’t always the best trainers, but they can be. With a focus on specific learning styles and training tools, you’ll develop your own teaching skills and the ability to explain complex concepts to others – whether that’s your coworkers, employees, or wholesale customers. Utilizing education theory, different teaching styles, and the various ways that training takes place, you’ll be better equipped to communicate, demonstrate, and check for understanding.
Employee Retention and Job Satisfaction
When you have a great training program, your employees perform better. Ongoing education results in a more driven and dedicated staff, and employees are more likely to stay with a company if they’re given opportunities to develop professionally and continue to learn. Finding new ways to continue to challenge your team and improve their skills will keep them motivated and help you retain your staff – saving your company money and time.
Developing Your Menu and Training Program
How will you take all of this knowledge and apply it to your unique business? Learning the systems that help a cafe operate and thrive will assist you in applying the skills in this course to your future retail success. We’ll provide templates for beverage recipes, seasonal drinks, and training assets for a team of baristas so you can have control over the quality and consistency of the drinks served at your cafe!
Open your cafe
Our students love what they do, and we want them to be wildly successful in whatever way they define success. We aim to provide tools & concepts that empower your roasting business, retail cafe, or both to respond to your unique market needs and we share strategies that will enable you to start where you are and grow a business that suits your goals.
Monday and Tuesday: Mill City Roasters, 9:00am-4:00pm
We will email students 1-2 weeks before class with parking & lunch details. More information to help plan your trip is available on our Visit the Mill City Campus page.
