RoastPATH was born of the idea that we could create a space for like-minded professional coffee lovers to pool data in a collaborative environment that might potentially elevate us all personally, professionally, and financially.
Mill City Roasters didn’t invent data logging, but we certainly popularized it as the first roaster manufacturer to offer data logging as a standard feature on every machine we built. Data logging functionality quickly became an indispensable tool for education, iteration, and quality assurance.
Introducing Predictive Intelligence
RoastPATH Predictive Intelligence provides a clear starting point for new and unfamiliar greens in a way that is directly applicable to your roaster.
This new RoastPATH predictive profiling function analyzes years of historical production roasting data from nearly 1 million roast profiles.
Roast Profile vs. Path
Roast profiles are detailed records of everything from the roast: data harvested from thermocouples, operator inputs from the control panel, and time/temperature landmarks for the coffee itself. A profile can serve as a road map or a recipe, a way to show how each variable produced a specific roast, and how to replicate it.
The limitations of roast profiles are their transferability. Each roaster's unique model, fuel, and venting create an ecosystem requiring a new profile. Profiles are also bulky in terms of data. Sharing a profile as a file is like sharing a file from Photoshop with all layers and features included. It’s more data than anyone needs, and the details aren’t helpful to a different roaster.
A Path simplifies a profile to essential data: bean temperature landmarks (turning point, dry end, first crack, drop) and rate of rise for the entire roast. This shareable, portable roadmap helps roasters improve coffee quality with fewer iterative roasts.
How it Works
Users input origin, processing method, and their specific machine to discover production coffee roast trends that provide suggested finish temp and development time.
Path Intelligence then offers a distribution profile of all historic community production finish temperatures of that specific coffee.
Path Intelligence customizes temperature targets by analyzing the operator's account for their roaster-specific event temperatures based on origin and processing method.
Each bar in the histogram generates an associated Bean Temperature Path profile based on 3 key data points and the 2 key associated development times extracted from every archived roast that matches the processing and origin.
This profile can then be added to the user's Path Library.
Saved Path profiles can be imported to and opened directly by the RoastPATH app as a roast profile plan underlay for green/yellow transition, first crack and finish temp time target, and associated development times.
Working with new greens and dialing in new profiles is part of the discovery, joy, and science of roasting. Path Intelligence allows roasters to streamline the type of profile iteration required to unlock the best characteristics for an unknown green. It's built to provide a more efficient starting point for roasters, saving time and greens to help you get to "good" faster than ever before.
Path Intelligence is available to all RoastPATH users with qualifying subscriptions.
