In our roastery

This coffee is part of our Colombia Varietal Series, which showcases the diversity of rare coffee varieties being produced in Colombia. From Bryant:

Visiting with Arnulfo Leguizamo during our trip to Colombia was inspiring. Hosted at Finca La Primavera, Arnulfo spoke on the history of his relationship with Cafe Imports, how he sees the future of coffee in younger generations coming into coffee production, and his environmental philosophy. Arnulfo is a leader in the community supporting producers in their craft, and works closely with his son Diego.

Arnulfo won the Colombia Cup of Excellence in 2011 with the highest bid on coffee to that date, and in 2013, USBC Champion Pete Licata used Arnulfo’s Sidra lot for his winning espresso. Sidra has a complicated history; many people argue over whether it is a varietal or a cultivar. Genetic testing has shown marks of an Ethiopia Landrace, which would make it a varietal, but some signs indicate that it is a hybrid from a Nestle lab.

We have very limited inventory of this microlot.

In your lineup

Treat this coffee as a top-shelf or experiential offering. Offer it strictly as a pour-over or single-origin espresso to showcase its unique characteristics. Due to its limited supply, this coffee is a good candidate for a smaller, premium packaging format.

If you have a good reference profile for coffees from Kenya or Ecuador, those are a good starting point for this coffee. Apply a lot of heat up front, then lower it aggressively mid way through the roast. The seeds are above average size, and this varietal can taste vegetal if the roast is too light or moves too quickly.  Elongating the roast will create deeper sweetness and more caramelization.

About

Arnulfo Leguizamo is who every cafetero in Colombia should aspire to be: as a member of Asociación Los Naranjos, he is a leader in his community and supports his fellow farmers in their efforts to improve their quality. In 2011, he won the first prize at the Cup of Excellence with coffee from this farm. An unprecedented price of $45/lb was paid for the Cup of Excellence–winning coffee. He continues to be a hard-working, approachable, and generous producer, and an inspiration to others—including his son Diego, who has started managing Finca El Faldon alongside his father. Diego has trained up as a cupper and seeks to be in charge of operations in the future, a multigenerational coffee family.

Recently, Arnulfo has become even more of an innovator and leader in his community by opening a café.
